9 Deepwood Rd

Built in 1971 by Weston architects Edward Sutt Associates, the house is a textbook East Coast Contemporary, with 2,851 square feet of interior space. It's the wood-clad, site-fitted branch of Mid-Century Modern, with a Scandinavian, almost chalet edge. The exterior details:

• Vertical tongue-and-groove cedar, left to weather

• A low gable roof with deep overhangs and exposed outriggers

• Cantilevered balconies with plain stick balusters

The road side is nearly blank, and the entry is a single sliding door. The downhill side opens completely, with a run of eight-foot glass sliders onto a wrap-around deck that hangs over the rock. Upstairs, a central common room opens onto a full-length balcony.

The structure stays honest throughout: clean horizontal lines, natural wood, and glass facing the trees. Period-correct for anything from the early '70s onward. It reads just as easily as a modern retreat.

The kitchen and primary bath were recently renovated, designed and built by the owners. They feature custom cabinetry, high-end appliances, and lighting and tile by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec. Both rooms give you contemporary interiors without breaking the character of the house.

The Land

Most people don't expect this terrain within an hour of the city. On camera it passes for the Pacific Northwest or the Colorado foothills.

The house was built the way Contemporaries were meant to be: fitted to the ledge, not blasted flat. A high rock cliff cuts through the property and drops into a large pond fed by a running creek. Around it you'll find:

• Moss-covered rock yard

• Mature forest

• Cliff face and an upper mesa

• Pond edge and creek bed

From late spring through fall, the canopy hides the house completely. That makes true wilderness scenes possible without a company move to deep woods. The surrounding area is threaded with miles of 18th-century stone walls.

• A long gravel drive opens onto a partially secluded parking area that takes large vehicles.

• Detached garage, built new in 2018, available for gear staging, wardrobe, or crew holding.

Your Hosts

The owners are NYC-based creative professionals in advertising and event production, so they know how a set runs. They live in the house full-time with their young son and a large, friendly dog.
